Soleil levant

The plastic tapestries (110x90 cm each) are entitled Soleil levant and Soleil couchant.

Plastic bags scavenged from the seashore are cut to wefts and crocheted or woven into the loom grid of an anti-slip mat. The polyester mat provides warps and a support structure for the rug design that represents romantic seascapes: sunset and sunrise.

I am revisiting a Finnish tapestry tradition. ‘Ryijy,’ or Finnish rugs are textiles woven by peasant women in the 19th century. The rugs were used on the walls for isolation, as well as home decoration.
